Getting around by air
Traveling within India by air has been an easy and hassle-free experience. Many national and regional airlines offer frequent flights to all corners of the country.
Major airlines include Air India, IndiGo, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, AirAsia, GoAir and Vistara.
You can book flights directly on the airlines’ websites. Flight bookings can also be made through Cleartrip (www.cleartrip.com), Make My Trip (www.makemytrip.com) and Yatra (www.yatra.com).
The security check-in is relatively painless (as compared to the US), but as an extra step. you have to produce your ticket and passport at the gate before you enter the airport. A digital ticket on your smartphone usually suffices. Every item of cabin baggage needs a label, which must be stamped as part of the security check (collect tags at the check-in counter).
The recommended check-in time for domestic flights is two hours before departure, even though check-in actually closes 45 minutes before departure. It is a good idea to ask your concierge, or local advisor about the traffic, and how long it would take to get to the airport. The baggage allowance is usually 15kg (10kg for smaller aircraft) in economy class, although Air India allows 25kg.
